PB4L Matrices & Behaviour Flow-Charts

Fostering a Positive Learning Environment: PB4L & Behaviour Management

At Marymede Catholic College, we believe that positive behavior is a prerequisite for effective learning and personal growth. Our approach is grounded in the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) framework—a school-wide, evidence-based system that shifts the focus from purely reactive discipline to the proactive teaching of social and behavioral expectations.

The goal of PB4L is to create a predictable, consistent, and safe environment where every student understands what is expected of them in every setting, whether they are in the classroom, the playground, or the wider community. By clearly defining, teaching, and acknowledging these behaviors, we empower our students to take ownership of their conduct and thrive as respectful, responsible learners.

The PB4L Matrices

Our matrices serve as the “roadmap” for behavior at Marymede. They translate our core values into observable, everyday actions.

  • Consistency: The matrices ensure that all staff use the same language and hold students to the same high standards across all year levels and campuses.
  • Context-Specific: They provide clear guidance for different environments, including the canteen, digital spaces, and co-curricular activities.
  • Teaching Tools: These are not just sets of rules; they are instructional tools used during Pastoral periods to explicitly model “The Marymede Way.”

Behaviour Flow-Charts

To support staff in maintaining this environment, our Behaviour Flow-Charts provide a transparent, step-by-step guide for responding to student conduct.

  • Clarity of Process: The flow-charts distinguish between “Minor” (Teacher-managed) and “Major” (Office-managed) behaviors, ensuring that responses are proportionate and consistent.
  • Restorative Focus: At every stage, our process emphasizes restorative practices—repairing relationships and learning from mistakes rather than focusing solely on punitive measures.
  • Support Pathways: The flow-charts outline when to engage House Leaders, Wellbeing staff, or the Learning Diversity team to ensure that underlying needs are addressed.
